JFriends going on Mitzvah day 2017

November 19, 2017

Hi JFriends, we are volunteering on Mitzvah Day in 2 weeks: Sunday 19 November 2017 for the 3rd year now, join us for a Mitzvah (it’s free). Let’s make a difference!

Picture this in mind: Sunday 1pm in Hampstead, cosy warm community library, the smell of old books, students working and us JFriends spread between the rows of books-cleaning and tiding up the shelves. After the session there is an option of going together for drinks.

------

About the Charity:

Keats Community Library is local volunteer-run community library. It is run by the community for the community.

When Camden Council closed Heath Library in 2012, a group of local residents started a charity to take it over, and soon 40 volunteers had stepped forward to run it. It’s a much loved local hub now, providing not only a brilliant library with up to date fiction and non-fiction, but also rhyme-time for toddlers, creative writing and chess classes for children, and occasional events such as a magician, a puppeteer and family concerts. For the grown-ups there’s a Reading Group, and fabulous (and affordable) evening events with such luminaries as Michael Palin, Sir Derek Jacobi, Dame Diana Rigg, Howard Jacobson, Sir David Hare, and recitals by singers from the Royal Opera House.

The Library is housed in a lovely Grade II listed building with a beautiful stained glass dome. It is next to Keats House Museum, surrounded by a lovely garden.

Whilst the volunteers have their hands full dealing with the books and the borrowers, the library needs extra volunteers to give the shelves a good old clean. Just an hour or two of your time would make a difference and they will provide cleaning materials, tea and biscuits!

Friday night Shabbat UK with JFriends

October 26, 2017

At its core, ShabbatUK harnessed the goodness and uniqueness of a traditional, authentic Shabbat and invited Jews around the country to celebrate it in a way they never have before. Shabbat is a central part of what it is to be Jewish. It plays a crucial role in Jewish identity with its powerfully uplifting and transformative qualities.

The Chief Rabbi called on Jews across the UK, regardless of their level of religious observance, to celebrate a Shabbat unlike any other. Everybody participates in ShabbatUK, from the most observant Jews to those who may have never experienced the beauty of a Shabbat.

JFriends TED Talk Style French night - When Hypnosis and Neuroscience meet!

March 23, 2017

When Hypnosis and Neuroscience meet!

By Dr John Butler, Neuroanatomy, neurosurgery, neuroscience and Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is an intriguing phenomenon that is only partially understood.  An object of fascination for some, it is an object of fear, or at least, suspicion for others and seriously misunderstood by a great many people.

In this lecture, Dr John Butler will give an overview of the scientific knowledge of hypnosis and brain activity, the main clinical applications of hypnosis and explain, in non-technical language, how to use hypnosis to improve your intellectual, emotional, social and business life. Practical demonstrations of self-help applications will be given.

WATCH: Dr. John Butler

Dr Butler's clinical work was first filmed over 20 years ago and since then has been reported many times in the media, including a major BBC television series, “Mysteries”, in 1997 and Channel 4’s breakthrough live broadcast with John Butler using hypnosis as a sole anaesthetic while surgery was performed on a patient in April 2006  (“HypnoSurgery Live”, More 4 / Channel 4 TV).

He has made more than 30 television appearances as an expert in hypnotherapy with several programmes focused on his use of hypnotherapy as an anaesthetic for chronic pain and in invasive surgeries.

Michal Banai - actress

Improvisational theatre is a form of theatre where most or all of what is performed is created at the moment it is performed. In its purest form, the dialogue, action, story, and characters are created collaboratively by the players on the spot without use of an already prepared, written script.

When it's good, it seems like magic. As an actress performing mainly in Improvised comedy I have been dealing on a daily basis for the past decay with the question of why it is so hard for us to “improvise” on our day to day life? Why is it so hard for us to just say what’s on our mind, why do we get “stuck” when we’re put on the spot and why can’t we just be ourselves without judging everything we want to say before it comes out of our mouth?

In her talk Michal will present a few improvisation rules, that if you stick to in real life you might find communication and creativity come much easier than usual.

The Basket Brigade project aim to make this, and every Christmas, a special one for thousands of needy people across London. The YES Group London Basket Brigade is on the 23rd December every year, when volunteers come together to pack and deliver food hampers for the needy.

Just picture the scene… it’s a school hall filled with hundreds of volunteers on 23 December. All these people are there to contribute by helping to pack these food baskets. Once 1,000 baskets are packed, the volunteers disperse to deliver these baskets all over London. Why? It's simple, they are passionate about giving and helping those in need.

It costs us just £10 to feed a family of 4. For this inside a roasting tin they provide the ingredients for a full Christmas dinner. They receive a Chicken/Vegetarian option, Stuffing, Gravy, Potatoes, Parsnips, Carrots, Brussels Sprouts, Mince Pies, Xmas Pudding, Custard and Satsumas. And for this year, we’d love to get enough donations to also add in crackers :)

An evening of young people, pizza and JFriends fascinating talks.

Jonny Benjamin (born 1987) is a British mental health campaigner, author and vlogger. In January 2014 he launched a social media campaign called Find 'Mike' to search for the stranger who talked him out of taking his own life in 2008. The purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness of suicide and mental illness. It went viral and received global media attention. Within just two weeks Jonny found the stranger he was looking for, Neil Laybourn. The story of the campaign was made into a documentary film that was released in May 2014.

When astronomers discuss The Big Bang Theory, they are referring to our ever expanding Universe. Why should we take their claims seriously? The main reason is that many concepts of the theory have been predicted and confirmed by solid observations. I will briefly review the early history of modern cosmology, focusing on why great sceptic minds like Einstein were eventually convinced of this crazy idea.

JFriends Sunday Volleyball at St Alban's Park

August 22, 2015

So we are going for a real volleyball games this time :-)
Thank you Marc Ovits for the idea!

Following on from the fun we had at Camden a couple of weeks ago, we've booked some beach volleyball courts for a 'real' game followed by a picnic in the park. We'll organise the teams and try to get a mini tournament together to add to the fun.

The game will be at Verulamium Park, St. Albans. If you haven't been there before, it's a gem of a park with stunning scenery and lots of activities. It's going to be a lot of fun !

We will be meeting at Hendon Park Cafe on Queens Road (close to Hendon Central Station) at 11am to drive together. If you have a car and can take people with you, that would be very helpful. Please let us know in advance so we can organise lifts for those people who want a lift. If you prefer to meet us there that's fine (please let us know) as well but make some plans in advance as parking is limited.

To cover the cost of the courts, snacks and drinks we're charging £7. Join us and bring your friends

See u all there!!
